Watering Information for Colorado during Drought Conditions

As we all are aware of, the drought conditions in Colorado have made a significantly negative impact on the health of plants in our region. This drought, together with the severely hot weather earlier this summer and the drought conditions that we have faced these past four winters have left significant amounts of plant material in a very stressed condition.

With all these factors in mind, this winter is a season that has potential to further damage or kill much of your plant material. Trees are our biggest concern for two reasons. First, by the time many trees show any signs of stress they are all ready in a position where their survival is in jeopardy. Second, if a tree was to die, the cost of replacement is much more significant than say #1 perennial or a #5 shrub.

Your City's Watering Criteria

Following are our proposed services for the winter watering of the trees on your property.

Watering Rates

In concurrence with Carl Wilson (Horticultural Specialist with the Colorado State University Co-operative Extension), the following are our proposed services for the winter watering of trees:

Established Deciduous Trees

One watering per month with 10 gallons of water per inch of trunk diameter (at knee height). For example: a 5" diameter Maple tree requires a soaking with 50 gallons a month.

Young and Evergreen Trees

Two waterings per month with 10 gallons of water per inch of trunk diameter (at knee height). For example: a 7" diameter Pine tree requires a soaking of 70 gallons twice a month.

Watering Technique

As it currently stands, only the City of Golden is not allowing any winter water what-so-ever. All other jurisdictions are allowing hand water. Those within the jurisdiction of the Denver Water Board are allowed watering by hose with no open end. This is achieved with a soil needle, a soaker hose or a soft water nozzle.

Time and Temperature for Watering

Winter watering is best completed when temperatures are above 40 degrees. Watering is done during daylight hours so that time is given for the water to soak in before nightfall and the accompanying lower temperatures.

Duration of Winter Watering

Unless we receive substantial winter moisture, this tree watering program should be continued during the entire period of time that the irrigation system is shut off.
